Ovarian Cancer Diagnosis

Doctors and researchers agree that it is difficult to make an ovarian cancer diagnosis in most cases when it is in its earliest stages as generally there are no symptoms to indicate that it has developed until it reaches its later phases. However, there are some forms of ovarian cancer that exhibit symptoms earlier than others and improve the chances for successful treatment and cure. Treatment of ovarian cancer will depend on the type, grade, and stage of the disease when it is discovered.

Universities, cancer institutes, and hospital laboratories are all working as quickly as possible to develop a screening test similar to the one used for breast cancer to make ovarian cancer diagnosis easier and at the earliest stages possible. Clinicians are trying to pinpoint the cause of ovarian cancer and the factors that may contribute to its development and although they have made great strides in that direction, at this time, no specific cause has been determined. Although there is no true test for ovarian cancer, several studies are in place to learn how to find it in its earliest stages to help physicians treat it as soon as possible.

At this point in time, doctors and gynecologists do their best to assess the risk factors for a patient developing ovarian cancer and advise them to have regular checkups especially if there is a family history of the disease. If a patient receives an ovarian cancer diagnosis, treatment plans may include surgery in the form of a hysterectomy that includes the ovaries to prevent the cancer from spreading to other organs, and possibly chemotherapy for the same reason. It is important for those in the high risk category to be vigilant and continue regular checkups to ensure that if the disease develops that it is detected as soon as possible. The earlier it is found, the better the odds for cure and improved prognosis.
