Signs of Ovarian Cancer
Known as one of the silent killers of women, ovarian cancer is hard to detect because symptoms often do not appear until the disease has reached its later stages, and in many cases, has spread to other tissues in the abdominal cavity. However, there are some forms of the disease that will exhibit the signs of ovarian cancer earlier than others and diagnosis may be determined more quickly and prognosis improved.
Women with high risk factors that may contribute to the development of ovarian cancer, such as a family history of the disease, should be monitored with regular checkups by their doctor or gynecologist. Signs of ovarian cancer may include bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, urinary difficulties, and/or problems eating or feeling full quickly. Since these signs can indicate ovarian cancer in its early stages, it is important that if patients experience them on a daily or persistent basis, they should consult their doctor for a medical evaluation.
Treatment of ovarian cancer will depend on the type, grade, and stage of the disease when it is diagnosed. A treatment plan may include oophorectomy (removal of the ovaries), hysterectomy to ensure the disease has not spread, and possibly chemotherapy for the same reasons. Researchers and scientists have been working on ways to help doctors recognize the signs of ovarian cancer and diagnose it at its earliest stages so treatment can be begun as soon as possible to successfully decrease the mortality rate of women who develop it. They are trying to devise a screening test similar to the one used for breast cancer in order to accomplish this, but unfortunately, there is no accurate screening test available at this time. Work continues in this endeavor at many hospitals, research institutes, and cancer laboratories, and new techniques to diagnose ovarian cancer are being examined.
